Week 17 Rankings

Welcome to the last rankings of the 2011-2012 fantasy football season.  If you're still reading in the last week of the season, congratulations on making it through a tough and injury riddled NFL season.  And hopefully if you're still reading that also means that you are in your league Championship!

As for myself, your very own Fantasy Football Consigliere is the official winner of a 14 team league, with a 47 point victory this past Sunday.  So a little self congratulations to me and if any of you wish to congratulate me yourself via an e-mail (send to mattymccall@gmail.com) or via a comment in regards to this post, by all means do so.  I'm just kidding of course, I'm sure my ego is big enough as it is already (just ask my wife).

Anyways, last rankings, so sad, I will miss the weekly posts and seeing how many of you actually view them.  I will particularly miss my Russian audience.  I still don't know why they read but I welcome them nonetheless.  And good luck in your championship!!!

Week 16 Rankings

Are you in your championship game this week?  Or are you in the semi-finals fighting to make it to the what I like to call "The Ship?"  Either way, congratulations are in order to those of you who have made it that far and if you happen to be in playing in a money league, I hope you win.  It's always nice to make some free cash for just playing a fantasy sport.

I would also like to apologize to any Johnny Knox owners who happen to read this article and Johnny, if you happen to be a secret follower (yeah, I know he's not, but it would be cool if he was) I apologize to you too.  If you read last week's rankings, or maybe it was the week before that, you know that in one of my leagues basically every player on my team has been injured at some point.  So one of my injury replacement pickups was Johnny Knox.  Had him for one week and then BAM!!!!  Johnny gets bent in half and has to have surgery to stabilize his vertebrae.  So goes my season in that particular league, to which I'm completely out of the playoffs and playing not to finish dead last and be the guy responsible for brining beer to the draft next year.

So good luck to everyone, particularly those trying to win The Ship!

Week 15 Rankings

So I was sitting at work today on the 13th floor just doing my job as usual.  My buddy Marcus on the 12th floor sends me an IM saying that I need to come down to play with Fang.  Now you're probably thinking "what the hell is a dog named Fang doing on the 12th floor of a Global Energy Company?!"  To that I answer, it wasn't a dog.  Fang is actually a 5 foot inflatable helium filled remote control shark.

I know, freakin' awesome that someone came up with a 5 foot inflatable helium filled remote control shark!!!!  Amazon was selling it and someone down on the 12th floor bought it.  And I was allowed to fly it around the office!  I loved ever second of it and it completely made my day.  Now my team and I have to come up with some idea to top a 5 foot inflatable remote control shark, which may be impossible.

But honestly, that story has nothing to do with fantasy football, I just wanted to tell you that someone designed a freakin' floating remote control shark blimp.  If you decide you want one, I think it cost around $35 and again, it's on Amazon.

As for the fantasy football part of this blog, well, if you're still reading this far into the season either my advice has helped you greatly, to which I say "you're welcome," or you just enjoy reading my weekly posts, to which I say "Thank you."  Oh, or you're Russian and you just keep happening to stumble upon my blog because the word Consigliere must be similar to some other word in Russian.  Honestly, Google blogs let's you check out your audience on a highlighted map where countries are colored green that access this page.  So thank you to my Russian audience!!

Anyways, finally, fantasy football talk.  Either you are in the first or second round of your playoffs, so good luck or contuing good luck to you.  Keep an eye on the injury report as my buddy faced an opponent this past weekend who had Adrian Peterson on his squad and Peterson was announced he was not going to play at around 12:00.  Plenty of time to put someone else in Peterson's place in his lineup, but for some reason he didn't.  So he lost the playoff game to my buddy, so congrats to my buddy.  But seriously, don't be lazy, watch Fantasy Football Now on ESPN2 at 11:30 on Sunday.  They constantly run down through the injuries like once every 10 minutes for an hour and a half.  There's where I get all my last minute injury info from.

All right, on to the rankings!!

Week 14 Rankings

So are you in the playoffs?  You have another week to try and make it in?  Or are you so far out of it, you probably gave up reading my weekly postings and have moved on to spending more time with your husband/wife?  Regardless of your scenario (and for those of you out of the playoff chase, I recommend you keep playing.  No one likes someone who just gives up and is a rollover) congratulations or good luck on making the playoffs!

I've made the playoffs in one league as the #2 seed and completely got crushed in the other league I'm in (sitting dead last at the moment, but I blame injuries since I lost Andre Johnson for over half the season and he's injured again, Schaub out at the beginning of the playoff chase, Kenny Britt torn ACL back in week 3, Felix Jones high ankle sprain and DeMarco Murray took over, my backup QB Kevin Kolb with Turf toe right at the same time Schaub went down, Willis McGahee with a broken hand one week, and Santana Moss 4 or 5 weeks with a broken hand.).  So you can tell that my entire season was just destroyed by injuries, let alone drafting Rashard Mendenhall with my 1st round pick which was pick 10 in a ten team league.

But enough about me and my woes and let's focus on you and what you need to do to win your league.  Pick up backups, steal players from other people in the playoffs, and play your studs.  All 3 are very important, particularly playing your studs, as people tend to get "cute" in the playoffs and start playing matchups instead of riding the guys that got you to the playoffs in the first place.

So use my rankings to help you win it all and good luck!  Any questions or wish to tell me a "Tale of Woe" about your fantasy football season and how you now hate fantasy football, e-mail mattymccall@gmail.com.

Folks, it's late, at least late for a freshly turned 30 year old man, and it's been a long day and a long week, evne with having Monday off.  So I just finished my rankings for the week.  I seriously need to quit my real job and do this for a living instead as it is much more fun and I would much rather spend my days talking and writing about fantasy football.  Anywho, on to Week 13's Rankings.  Oh, and have a question, e-mail mattymccall@gmail.com.

Week 12 Rankings

Happy Thanksgiving Eve!

Back when in my early 20s Thanksgiving Eve was the single greatest party night of the year.  I have many memories (or more exactly fuzzy memories) of having a great time.  One time, I drank so much that I asked my buddy to punch me in the stomach in order to puke.  And like a good friend, he didn't even flinch at the request and made solid contact, followed by some solid projectile vomit (sorry to those of you who are now grossed out, especially family members who read this).

But now I'm 30 and the days of Thanksgiving Eve parties are over, as I have matured (although my wife may disagree with that statement).  So instead of partying, what I'm doing instead is posting my week 12 rankings!!  So lucky to you who need the rankings, particularly those of you right on the edge of the playoffs.

The RB/WR Flex Ranking is back again this week and hopefully it helped you out last week.  I didn't explain the ranking very well if at all last week, but I think it's fairly self explanatory.  You're looking at your RB/WR flex position on your roster, you can't decide whether to start Toby Gerhart this week (Adrian Peterson is out) or Eric Decker (playing in an extremely run heavy offense where it's completely possible to run on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down).  If you look at the RB/WR Flex Rankings this week you'll see that the answer is Toby Gerhart.

So that's how the RB/WR Flex Rankings work and of course you know how the positional rankings work.  Good luck to all still attemptin to make the playoffs!

Week 11 Rankings (with the release of a new RB/WR Flex Ranking)

Week 11 and only a couple of weeks away from the start of the fantasy football playoffs in either week 13 or 14 depending on how your league is set up.  That means every move you make counts that much more, even if you're sending at a current 0-10 record.  Still picking up players on the waiver wire even though you are way out of the playoff picture is still the way to go, as it can prevent an owner you may not like from making the playoffs.

So my buddy texted me right before the start of the games last Sunday asking me who to start between a WR and a RB.  I don't remember the players names or who I told him to start, but it led him to a follow up text suggesting that I a do a WR/RB flex ranking, but that maybe it would be too hard.  I tossed it around in my head for a brief moment and thought to myself, self "You already rank the RBs and the WRs, so how hard could it be to take the two lists and combine them?"

Turns out it wasn't that hard at all.  Had it done in about 30 minutes during the last part of my day job and actually found it quite fun.  So enjoy all the different positional rankings this week as well as the new RB/WR Flex Ranking.

Feel free to let me know what you think about the new ranking or if you have any other questions e-mail The Consigliere at mattymccall@yahoo.com.

Week 10 Rankings

Week 10, and strangely enough, no bye weeks.  So that means everyone is available on your roster and on the waiver wire if you need someone.  Also, playoffs are just around the corner, so now's the time to make those all important decisions on who to start and sit.

And along those lines, allow me to let you in on a theory of mine.  It’s called “Don't get cute and overthink your lineup.”  If a player has been producing for you and you think he has a bad matchup, more often than not he's still going to produce.  A lot of times talent trumps matchups.  So play your studs, play those guys you've been leaning on all season and ride them to the playoffs and hopefully a championship.

If when you click on the link to the rankings and it doesn't download, there is a download button in the top right you can click on and the spreadsheet will open.

Week 9 Rankings

Here, we are, half way through the regular season of the real NFL, and only about 4 or 5 weeks away from the Fantasy Football playoffs, depending on how your league has the playoff schedule set up.  That means that every move you make, whether through picking up a player via the waiver wire (such as maybe Andy Dalton from the Cincinnati Bengals as a bye week fill in) or deciding to play one player over another (Knowshon Moreno over Willis McGahee because you just don't trust that McGahee can play well with a broken hand).], could spell the difference between playoffs or the loser's bracket.

So take a look at the rankings for those big time decisions that will lead to either fantasy elation or fantasy gloom.  If you have a question, as always, you can e-mail mattymccall@gmail.com.

Week 8 Rankings

Listen; I'm tired, I just cooked a massive electric skillet full of chicken fried rice that is going to feed a freakin' army at work tomorrow, and the World Series is on, and I'm rooting for the Cardinals (The Consigliere likes other sports besides just football).  So the energy and attention is just not there to be witty or give you any in depth fantasy advice.  At this point in the season, especially if you have been paying attention, the pickups you need are obvious.  But what's not always obvious is who to play ahead of who.  So take a look at this week's ranking if you find yourself flip flopping on who to start in your lineup.  And as always, free feel to e-mail mattymccall@gmail.com to ask any question and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Week 7 Rankings

Hello loyal followers.  It's your favorite Fantasy Football Consigliere here (probably your only as people don't use the word Consigliere very often these days).  Back with your week 7 rankings, and this is an important week, particularly if your record is 0-6, 1-5, or 2-4, as you definitely need some help to turn your season around.  And to those of you who are 0-6, don't get yourself too down.  I myself was 0-6 in 2007 and made it all the way back to win the whole thing.  So although it may look bleak, keep on playing, as no one likes it in a league when people stop caring and stop setting there lineups on a week in and week out basis.

Now I will jump down off my soap box and let you know about a few pickups to potentially make this week:

QB
Tim Tebow (Denver Broncos):  If he's still out there by some miracle, and your QB is on a bye this week or a future week, or the QB you have right now just isn't getting it done, snap this guy up.  You'll find him in my top 10 for QB ranks this week, and potentially for the rest of the season.

Matt Moore(Miami Dolphins):  You may be asking who the hell is Matt Moore, and I can't blame you.  From what I've seen, not too many people are high on this guy, making me alone on an island.  A sweet island with big screen tvs and plenty of beer and pizza, but an island nonetheless.  But I digress.  Matt Moore is the current QB for the Miami Dolphins, who, if Brandon Marshall doesn't drop aboout a hundred passes in the endzone against the New York Jets this past Monday night, would have had a halfway decent fantasy night against a good pass defense in the Jets.  I have Moore at 15 this week, ahead of the likes of Kevin Kolb and Sam Bradford, who have been top 15 plays all year.

Carson Palmer(Oakland Raiders):  This recommendation is not for this week, but for the weeks to come.  As Palmer becomes more comfortable in the offense, the more fantasy goodness you will see.  I have him ranked just inside my top 20 QBs this week at #19, with certainly potential to move inside the top 15 in the coming weeks if he performs well.

RB
DeMarco Murray(Dallas Cowboys):  No Felix Jones for 2-4 weeks, Tashard Choice on the trading block with no takers, by default the job goes to DeMarco Murray, with the caveat that since there are no takers on Choice, Murray will lose a few carries, but not many to make you skiddish on picking him up for your roster.  I have him at #19 this week, especially since he is playing one of the worst run defenses in the league in the St. Louis Rams.

Montario Hardesty(Cleveland Browns)I'm pretty confident Peyton Hillis won't be playing this coming week with his hamstring injury, and if he does by chance play, it won't be very many carries.  Hardesty is going to get the majority of touches in Hillis's stead, so he's worth a pickup if you need a bye week fill in, or potentially a flex play for the rest of the year.  Bad matchup this week in playing the Seattle Seahawks (I know, it seems silly), one of the better teams against the run.  Still, I wouldn't shy away from him if I were you.

Maurice Morris(Detroit Lions):  Jahvid Best concussed and Jerome Harrison trying to be traded (trade ended up rejected, but still, he was almost traded) so obviously Detroit is not interested in using him.  He's not spectacular, but against Atlanta, he's worth a shot if you need a one week fill in.

WR
Darrius Heyward-Bey (Oakland Raiders):  Never thought I would be recommending this guy as a pickup, and not just for a bye week fill in, but for a potential flex to maybe even a low end 2nd receiver.  He's had 3 really good games in a row, with over 82 yds receiving in each, so the love is going his way.  Now with Carson Palmer in house, there's a good chance Bey makes further strides in his development.  Get him now while you can.

Greg Little(Cleveland Browns):  Over 20 targets the past 2 games, he's been putting up consistent numbers, even in a PPR scoring format.  So if  you need a flex, you could do a lot worse than Greg Little.  I drafted this guy in one of my leagues knowing his production would eventually occur, and here we are going into week 7 with that exact thing happening.  I'd jump on this bandwagon now if I were you.

TE
Heath Miller(Pittsburgh Steelers):  I'm taking a gamble on Mike Wallace's hamstring keeping him out or at least limited in the upcoming game against Arizona.  That being the case, you could see Miller's targets, and therefore catches, as he snags anything that comes his way, increase.  Certainly a chance, but there aren't many better options out there.

Kevin Boss(Oakland Raiders):  I'm using my philosophy on rookie QB's with this one.  Although Carson Palmer is certainly not a rookie, (been in the league 7 years), he's a rookie to this team.  And just like with rookies, he has to learn the playbook.  When rookie QBs do that, they tend to use the tight end as a release valve when they are pressured or when they need a sure completion.  So who knows, Boss might finally do something worthwhile in fantasy this year afterall.

That's it for my recommendations, now on to the rankings!  If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me at mattymcall@gmail.com, and I'll answer your questions as soon as possible.

Week 6 Rankings

Week 6, another bye week.  This time around, things are more clear cut around the league as to who is starting, who is the backup, and who is getting the opportunity to become a fantasy stud.

A few quick recommendations for those looking for a pickup at the different positions:

QB:  Tim Tebow (even though he is on a bye this week, if you need a QB, I'm telling you right now, he'll produce.  Write it down.  His will to win will translate into fantasy goodness.)

RB:  Jackite Battle (Kansas City Chiefs), Earnest Graham (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), and Delone Carter (Indianapolis Colts)

WR:  Early Doucet (Arizona Cardinals), Darrius Heyward-Bey (Oakland Raiders), James Jones (Green Bay Packers)

TE:  Joel Dressen (Houston Texans), Visanthe Shiancoe (Minnesota Vikings)

K:  Olindo Mare (Carolina Panthers), Rian Lindell (Buffalo Bills)

D/ST:  Cincinnati Bengals, San Francisco 49ers

A little earlier this week, so hopefully this gives you an opportunity to pick up players off the waiver wire that you need.  Speaking of the waiver wire, a bit of advice.  Bye weeks start in week 5, so if there is a player out there you are thinking about picking up to fill in for you, picking up now would be better than fighting more people next week when they are panicking, trying to figure out what to do.

Dear Lord, Jamaal Charles is Dead!!! (at least in Fantasy Football he is)

Ok, so Jamaal Charles is not dead nor is he dying, but in the fantasy world, a torn ACL is like dying, cause you are being placed on injured reserve, never to be heard of again.  Well, that is until next season when everyone wonders if his knee is fully recovered and if he will still have that crazy break away speed and alusiveness.

So for those of you Jamaal Charles owners panciking, feeling as if your fantasy season is over, I am here to tell you to relax, to think things through, and not to panic.  Cause that what a good Consigliere does.  He calms the waters of the storm; and the storm in this case is the panic of Jamaal Charles owners.

First things first:  breathe.  Good, keep on breathing, keep your hands off of clicking "Add Player" on Dexter McCluster (third string RB for the Kansas City Chiefs) for right now and let's think this through.

Hopefully you drafted well and have a suitable backup you can put in who will at least get you half of what you expected Charles to get you (and hopefully you have a flex option where you can make up the remaining points with an excellent receiver you drafted or can pick up off of the waiver wire).

But if you don't have a suitable backup, you're left with the waiver wire, which at this point is not looking too promising, as there aren't many players available.  But if for some reason Thomas Jones is out there, pick him up, he's Charles's primary backup and will get the bulk of the carries.  Most likely he was drafted though, so that leaves the third string RB in Kansas City, Dexter McCluster.  Now McCluster is a dynamic playmaker with great speed and agility, but he's not an I Formation line it up and pound it guy, which Charles wasn't a pounder, but he could line it up and get 20 carries a game if necessary.  Nonetheless, I expect McCluster is going to touch the ball more, probably around 12-14 times a game, and with his speed and athleticism, he could easily break a big play any week.

But if you don't like McCluster, check to see where Ben Tate is.  With Arian Foster constantly nursing a sore hamstring, and Derrick Ward out with an ankle, that leaves Ben Tate as the defacto back in the Houston Texans lineup, and he has produced good fantasy numbers through the first two weeks.  Most likely he is on somebody's roster, but double check anyways.

And finally, if you can't find anyone on the waiver (assuming Thomas Jones is owned by someone), you might want to pick up McCluster and entertain a trade offer.  If you have depth at receiving corps, or one of your two good tight ends happens to be Rob Gronkowski or Aaron Hernandez from the New England Patriots, you might be wise to trade a top tier receiver and McCluster for a top tier or even second tier back with upside to try and salvage what will most likely end up being a dismal season fantasy wise without a potent second back to score you points.

But remain calm, as you can quite clearly see there are options.  Think it through, and if you're hand is still hovering over "Add Player" for Dexter McCluster, go ahead and pull the trigger if you think it's your best option, but you owe it to yourself and that $50 or $100 you dropped to get into the league this year.

The Consigliere

Ben Roethlisberger or Cam Newton? Answer to Reader Question

Question posted by Massimiliano:  Cam Newton has had better fantasy stats through two weeks.  Who do I start in week 3, Ben Roethlisberger or Cam Newton?

Well, first, "Massimiliano's" statement that Cam Newton has outscored Big Ben through the first two weeks is true.  And if you're playing real life football, Newton has also put up the better numbers.  So honestly this question to me is easy to answer.  You start Cam Newton.  I know there will be plenty of people out there who disagree with that, particularly Steelers fans (of which I am not, but in no way is my bias influencing my opinion), but the numbers so far prove out that Cam Newton is the better fantasy option.

Also, Big Ben was hit by a very good Baltimore Ravens defense, and still hit by a mediocore Seahawks defense.  Now he will be facing an Indianapolis Colts defense with two defensive ends in Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis who should just dominate the Steelers tackles and make them look like they're playing Pee Wee Football.

So Cam Newton is the better option this week, and maybe even for the rest of the season.

Welcome Back Loyal Readers (Week 2 Fantasy Football Positional Rankings)

It's 10:00 on a Wednesday night in between Weeks 1 and 2 of the football season, a good as time as any to have my first official post of the 2011 Fantasy Football Season.

So first things first, welcome back to those who followed this blog last year and for those of you who told me they wanted me to continue this blog, well here it is.  To those of you who are new, basically this blog is my way of trying to help the fantasy football players out there who need a little information to help them set their lineups on a week in and week out basis.

For example, this post is my official rankings for each position (QB, RB, WR, TE, D/ST, and K) for week 2.  Each week I will have my rankings for the upcoming weekend of football action, so feel confident that you will always have a place to go to help you make that big decision on who to start or sit.

Also, time willing, I like to post a couple of other columns called "In A Pinch" and "Love/Hate."  In a Pinch is all about telling you who I think are the best players available during the bye weeks.  Love/Hate is simply me talking about the players at each position who I think are poised to have a good week.

So there will be plenty of info out there to sink your teeth in and digest as the football season goes by.  As always, any time you have a question, feel free to e-mail mattymccall@gmail.com and I will be more than willing to answer your question.

So without further ado, below are the Week 2 Fantasy Football Positional Rankings:

Farewell to the 2010-2011 Fantasy Football Season

That’s all she wrote folks.  The 2010-2011 Fantasy Football Season has finally ended.  With the end of season comes a feeling of sadness, depression, and loneliness.    Well only sadness to me, as I love fantasy football and will miss staring at my laptop from Thursday through Monday night, praying that Calvin Johnson would get one more catch or that Ray Rice would finally find the end zone.  And I will miss my weekly articles and rankings.
As for depression and loneliness, if you feel those emotions, you might want to reevaluate your life.  There’s a lot more to life than just fantasy football.  There’s real football (you know, the playoffs), fantasy baseball and fantasy basketball, there’s March Madness, and maybe there’s work or a wife.  (Just kidding to my wife.  After fantasy football, you know you’re #2.  Just kidding again.  You’re #1, then fantasy football, then Duke Basketball, then the two cats)
Regardless of your priorities though, don’t forget that although the fantasy football season may be over, there is still plenty of work to be done in order to prepare for next year.  I myself have been gathering stats all year and compiling spreadsheets that will hopefully help me analyze in great detail each player, position, and team in the NFL.  I plan on sharing some of those spreadsheets as well as my conclusions derived from those spreadsheets throughout the offseason.  On top of that, I plan on taking a look at the incoming rookies that most likely will be drafted within the first couple of rounds, and ranking them at some point.
So while the season is over, there is still much work to be done if you want to have a chance to win next year.  Of course I might be going completely overboard in your opinion, and to be honest, I kind of agree with you.  Nonetheless, all the stat gathering and all the analysis is my idea of a good time.  I love finding new and improved ways to rank players that I think will give me (and you by default since you read this blog), an edge up on the competition.  I will cross my fingers that the people I play against (like my buddy Todd), don’t read my blog too often or in too much detail.  But the rest of you, I hope everything I provide in the offseason is beneficial to you.  If you have any ideas about anything you want me to write about in the offseason or want my opinion on a certain thought you had, feel free to e-mail me at mattymccall@gmail.com.  When I write the article on the blog, I will be sure to quote you as the source for the idea.
On that note, I bid thee farewell.  It’s been a wonderful first season on “The Fantasy Football Consigliere,” and I hope there will be many more seasons to come.  I don’t know when the next article will post, but I am planning on doing a season end wrap up at some point in the near future, possibly talking about the surprise fantasy studs and duds for the year and ranking the top players for each position for the 2011-2012 season.
So stay tuned and if your team is still in the real NFL playoffs (such as my Green Bay Packers), good luck to them and I hope that if they play the Packers at some point, they lose.  Ciao from The Consigliere!
